Vox Caprae is a free-form collective of artists and musicians based in Tokyo, Japan, directed and produced by Frank O.T. Reilly.
Launched in 2024, the project emerged from Frank O.’s frustration and self-loathing after spending over a decade navigating Japan’s underground music scene, where he often found himself disconnected and out of sync with everything surrounding him. Vox Caprae marks his first independent effort as the primary songwriter—a break from the constraints of genre and scene, offering a space where alcohol and creativity can flow unburdened by preconceptions.
The name “Vox Caprae,” loosely translated from Latin as “the voice of the goat”, holds both personal and symbolic weight. Throughout Reilly’s career, goats and sheep have been a strange yet persistent presence, almost following him without reason. More than once, others have jokingly compared his singing to the bleat of a goat—or a sheep, when they were feeling generous. Though sheep may seem cuter, Reilly feels a deeper kinship with the stubborn independence of a goat.
As an Italian living in Japan for most of his adult life, he knows all too well the experience of never fully belonging to any particular flock—musically or otherwise.
At its core, Vox Caprae is a project of continuous transformation. Every piece of music, every collaboration, and every moment within the collective evolves freely, defying conventional labels. In this fluid space, the only constant is the commitment to honesty in art—where every song is not just a composition, but an unfiltered expression of what lies beyond boundaries.
Vox Caprae operates under a SOLEMN OATH, a guiding principle designed to preserve artistic integrity — and mental sanity, within the collective.
This oath shapes not only the creative process but also the dynamics between collaborators, fostering an environment where authenticity takes precedence over conformity.
January 16th: Frank O. discusses his intention to write and release songs as a collective, convincing Anathema to collaborate to the arrangements under the influence of cheap alcohol and chewy yakitori in a dingy bar in Shibuya.
September: In the subsequent months, some rough instrumental demos are created. Despite having plans to start writing lyrics and recording at the beginning of the year, Frank O. is overcome by a strong sense of self-disgusts and postpones all works on the release. However, he keeps looking for interesting musicians to involve in the projects and writing down ideas for songs.
June 24th: Frank O. finally finds the emotive stability and courage to expose himself after a particularly inspiring trip to Italy, England and Scotland. The first demos for all the songs in "Vox Caprae, Acta Baphometi" are finally completed. The musicians for each track are finalized, and Vox Caprae start rehearsing and fine tuning the arrangements for each song.
August 20th: Vox Caprae begin recording their first mini-album, "Vox Caprae, Acta Baphometi". The whole process, including sound editing, mixing, and mastering, continues for two months.
